Mateo Badilla’s solo exhibit is an amalgamation highlighting Mateo's multidisciplinary work that draws from absurdist and fluxus motifs. The toad motifs reference the rhyme “Sana sana colita de rana”, “Heal heal frog tail.” These toad motifs symbolize self-awareness for how one distracts themselves with arbitrary things like humor to avoid processing troubling ailments. The frog is not really a healer, but it can provide some momentary comfort for inevitable uncomfortable feelings.
In more recent works, symbolism of vanishing points with passage of time are explored. They explore pressure from relationships, retrospective criticism, present frozen states, anticipation of the future, and acceptance of time in its entirety.
