Curatorial Statement
This year marks the return of the HWC Annual Spring Student Exhibition after a three-year hiatus. For 20 years, Harold Washington College hosted an annual exhibition of the work of students from the Department of Art and Architecture here on campus. In 2019, the annual exhibition was held at the CCC District offices. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, no exhibition could be held 2020, 2021 or 2022. This year we are excited to hold our 22nd HWC Annual Spring Student Exhibition back on the Harold Washington College campus in Room 102.
The HWC Department of Art & Architecture Spring 2023 Student Exhibition provides an opportunity to showcase the work of our talented Department of Art and Architecture students to both the campus community and the public. The exhibition features the work of 34 students from across the department. Mediums represented in the exhibition include ceramics, digital media and design, drawing, photography, printmaking, painting and sculpture.
For our exhibition this year we had the opportunity to invite Lauren M. Pacheco as our juror for the exhibition. Lauren is co- founder of the Chicago Urban Art Society and Slow & Low: Chicago Lowrider Festival. She is an associate faculty lecturer and former director of arts programming and engagement at Indiana University Northwest in the School of the Arts. Currently, she is a Co-Creative Director with the Chicago Humanities Festival.
This year we will be providing three purchase awards. Our awards this year are the President’s Purchase Award, selected by HWC President Daniel Lopez, the Juror’s Purchase Award, selected by our juror Lauren M. Pacheco, and the Department of Art and Architecture Chair Award, selected by DAA Chair Professor John Metoyer. Each student selected for a purchase award will receive either a $300 cash award or a scholarship for one 3 credit course at HWC. The selected students’ works will become a part of the Harold Washington College Permanent Collection.
The exhibition runs from April 19th to May 4th and is open to the public. Gallery hours are 10:00am-3:00pm Monday through Friday for the run of the show. A closing reception will be held May 2nd from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. Purchase awards will be announced during the reception at 4:30pm.
